"In a culture obsessed by externals and by physicality, it's like a bracing tonic to encounter such a lucid prescription for inner or spiritual fitness."
Tom Harpur, Toronto Star columnist and best-selling author whose latest book is Finding the Still Point - a Spiritual Response to Stress.
"An Engaging encounter with a vigorous Muslim intelligence wrestling with questions about the nature and nurture of the soul."
-- Professor Sheila McDonough, Department of Religion, Concordia University
This book covers for the first time:
- What spiritual fitness is.
- The benefit of spiritual fitness
- How to achieve spiritual fitness
- How to measure spiritual fitness
Spiritual well-being has always been of deep concern to humankind, for human happiness, fulfillment, harmony, peace and tranquility are never fully attained if the spiritual dimension of being human is not addressed. Our physical and spiritual well-being, in addition to our martial accumulation of wealth, are rarely sufficient to achieve these higher goals.
As we begin the new millennium, we are learning to appreciate the true importance of spiritual fitness. We are rediscovering that happiness, success, suffering and pain are formed largely from within and that it is high time to take preventive steps against spiritual "heat disease." We have it in our power to cultivate the soul in its natural journey towards spiritual fitness.
The approach outlined in this book is a social engineering approach, social, as in "friendly" and engineering as in "planned well." This approach, while based on Islamic teachings, draws as well from the rich heritage of other faith traditions, from psychology, and from the psycho-spiritual sciences.
